The cheese is made in a traditional fashion and is smoked without use of artificial ingredients. It is available as a normal cheese and there are also processed varieties which come as a block, in slices or as a cream cheese.
Karaván is the most popular cheese in Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, it is more of an eating cheese than a cooking one as it does not melt very well.
